How is Reliance Jio providing free unlimited 4G data when other companies charge high?
Other companies (read: Vodafone, Airtel, Idea, BSNL etc) charge hefty rates because they could.
Should 1 GB of data really cost Rs 300?
Despite the humongous advancements in wireless technology during the past few years, the rates have stayed constant. Correction, they have instead increased. The 3G rates were revised upwards by 15–20% just a few months back.
And that is when you purchase a data pack in advance. God forbid you use data when your datapack expires. You could be charged anywhere between Rs 4–10 per fricking MB of data.
Similarly, no benefits of the reducing costs have been passed on to the consumers.
Voice calling is still charged at Rs 1–1.5 per min. If you want to reduce that, you need to buy another special pack for ~Rs 60 (for STD) and ~Rs 40 (for local calls).
Despite the sheer number of free instant messaging apps on the market, messaging is still charged at Rs 1–2 per message. Want to send 300 “free” SMSs? Purchase 1 more SMS pack for just Rs 50 or so.
The roaming concept too somehow still lingers.
